Fabulous map showing “Superior” “Good” “Hilly or inferior” and “bad” roads and “dangerous hills”
Published by Gall & Inglis
Scale: 15 miles to an inch
Undated but the address of Gall and Inglis printed along the bottom is “London, 25 Patternoster Squ., & Edinburgh”. Gall and Inglis were only at this address for the short period of 1875-1878. On further inspection the address inside the front cover is 31 Henrietta Street, where G & I had offices in 1909. A helpful eBay member has pointed out that the railway line from Kirkham to Backpool was opened in 1903 and so the map must be at least that date. So it is likely that the base map from around 1875 was used in later reprints with railway lines being added and overprinted after 1909. And so the date can be fixed at 1908, although the road information is likely to be much earlier.
Covers with minor bumps and a little edgewear – inside the map has some age-related smudges in the sea and some light foxing.. one 3.5″ tear where the map joins with the cover and some wear to folds, through to the cloth in places otherwise generally clean
